Rehabilitation

The simple truth is that the success of your surgery isn’t determined when you leave the operating theatre.

Your surgeon will have skilfully performed a surgical procedure that is the initial step towards your successful outcome. However, to optimise results and get the best possible outcome, you will need to put in some hard work during the rehabilitation phases of your journey.

Most surgeons will agree that the success of their work depends on the partnership between themselves, the physiotherapist, and most importantly, you.

In hospital you'll be seen by a physiotherapist and provided with exercises to minimise complications and start the initial phase of your rehabilitation.  Your physiotherapist will advise you what exercises are appropriate based on your surgical procedure and any special instructions from the surgeon.

Following your orthopaedic surgery – be it a total knee replacement or an ACL knee ligament reconstruction – you will be seen by one of our experienced physiotherapists who are trained and knowledgeable on exercise progression.  We have worked with your surgeon to develop protocols that are based on the latest research and evidence which can be tailored to your individual needs and abilities.  We will talk you through the planned phases of your rehabilitation, so your expectations are informed and realistic.

We have the expertise, facilities and specialist state-of-the-art equipment that enables us to accelerate your rehab to its full potential.  Even when you are in the very early stages after surgery, still partial weight-bearing or in pain, we can utilise the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill or hydrotherapy pool, allowing exercise to take place that increases joint flexibility and builds muscle strength.  We will work with you to help reach the goals you want – whether it’s returning to top level sport, running, dancing or just walking to the shops.

For more information about your post-operative rehabilitation please contact us at the Centre for Clinical Physiotherapy and we will be happy to answer any queries you may have.
