Mr Andrew Feyi-Waboso’s trip to Malawi to set up an eye and rehabilitation unit

Date Posted: 27th January 2023

St Joseph’s are thrilled to share that Consultant Ophthalmologist Mr Andrew Feyi-Waboso is currently setting up an eye and rehabilitation unit at Mulanje Mission Hospital in Malawi.

Mr Feyi-Waboso has kindly given us an insight into his trip in Malawi. Firstly, he has met with the management team to secure training at Zomba Central Hospital. Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr Chinsisi Nyirenda has fortunately given nurses in depth training and various consumables such as lenses to help get the units up and running whilst the equipment stored in the UK is transported. So far training has been secured for 2 nurses, a technician, and a receptionist that Mr Feyi-Waboso has said ‘will go a long way in getting a strong working team together’.

Sally, Mr Feyi-Wasoso’s wife, and Eunice, Mulanje Mission Hospital rehabilitation technician, will run daily clinics on weekdays as well as visiting patients on the wards. The Rehabilitation centre will be beneficial to a variety of people, from children with disabilities to those suffering from stokes, amputees and several other conditions.

Mr Feyi-Wabos has expressed his excitement and ambitious expectations for Mulanje Mission Hospital, despite having a bumpy start with his 27-year-old Land Rover that broke down on the first day they arrived in Malawi!  The hospital is hoping to start surgery at the end of January and aim to successfully complete 200 cataract surgeries in the upcoming months with the help of Mr Feyi-Waboso.

St Joseph’s are proud of Mr Feyi-Waboso’s and Sally’s hard work and look forward to receiving continuous updates about the hospital and its life-changing work.
