Mr Williamson's specialities include investigation, diagnosis and treatment of colon and rectal cancer, abdominal pain, bowel symptoms, anal symptoms such as bleeding and pain, haemorrhoids (piles), skin tags and abdominal and groin lumps and hernias. Mr Williamson also specialises in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and gastroscopy (OGD).

Professional bio

Mr Williamson studied Medicine at Cardiff University, graduating in 2007 where he undertook surgical training throughout Wales. During this time Mr Williamson undertook a period of research into the molecular biology of colorectal cancer at Swansea University Institute of Life Science where he was awarded his Doctorate in 2015.

Mr Williamson published several research papers based on this and continues to be very engaged in surgical research both in his own hospital and participating in national trials. He is currently the local principle investigator for a national trial of emergency laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.

On completing surgical training, Mr Williamson was appointed to a prestigious Royal College of Surgeons fellowship in laparoscopic and advanced colorectal cancer surgery in St James University Hospital, Leeds. 

Mr Williamson was very pleased to be appointed to his current post in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in 2020 where he is a busy General and Colorectal Surgeon providing elective and emergency surgical care to patients at the Royal Gwent and Grange University Hospital.

Mr Williamson strongly believes in continuously developing his surgical skills and was recently awarded the ASGBI travelling fellowship to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney Australia where he learned about robotic surgical techniques from world leading experts.

Mr Williamson is passionate about supporting his colleagues and recently was elected to vice chair of the EYCN committee of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland which provides mentorship and support to new consultants in their first years of practice.

Personal Profile

Mr Williamson is a keen and dedicated surgeon and proud to work in South Wales where he grew up, went to school and trained in surgery. He has been married for 11 years and has 2 very active young boys who keep him busy when he is not in work. In Mr Williamson's free time, he enjoys sailing in Cardiff bay and has recently run the London Marathon.
