Professional bio

Dr Sam Hare is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist and Treasurer of the British Society of Thoracic Imaging. He has won several industry awards for chest radiology – including the NHS Innovation Cancer Challenge Prize & BMJ Cancer Team of the Year. Sam is frequently featured in national media – and most recently appeared as a COVID-19 chest imaging expert on BBC National news.

His specialist areas of expertise include lung cancer screening, lung nodules, interstitial lung disease and lung infections – including COVID-19.

As an experienced chest specialist, he provides imaging diagnosis in a number of respiratory conditions. Sam offers an expert opinion on CT chest scans, including lung cancer screening for early-stage lung cancer, and is able to provide imaging diagnosis for a wide array of lung conditions. His additional areas of specialist expertise include CT-guided lung biopsy; lung cancer radiofrequency ablation (RFA); & lung cancer screening/early lung cancer diagnosis.

Dr Hare’s technical lung biopsy expertise has been identified as providing earlier lung cancer diagnosis. He currently runs the award-winning ambulatory lung biopsy service at the Royal Free London NHS Trust. His innovative work has gained national recognition in Thorax, a world-leading respiratory medicine journal, as well as in the national media (The Times; BBC news).

Sam has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on lung cancer & lung biopsy.

Qualifications

Dr Sam Hare is a fully qualified Consultant Chest Radiologist (GMC 6030232) and a fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists.

Current NHS/Research Position

Sam works at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. He is also a lead radiologist for the London Cancer lung pathway board, which is responsible for improving London lung cancer outcomes and patient experience.
