St Joseph's Hospital Launches New Prostate Health Check Service
Date Posted: 5th March 2026
St Joseph's Hospital has launched a new Prostate Health Check service, giving men a dedicated pathway to access specialist assessment and advice about their prostate health.
The service allows men to self-refer for a comprehensive assessment, which includes a urology consultation, PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test, and a 20-minute diagnostic scan. Patients also receive a follow-up appointment to discuss their results with a specialist, providing reassurance and clear next steps.
This initiative is designed to make it easier for men to seek assessment if they are concerned or experiencing symptoms, helping them take proactive control of their health. Early diagnosis is crucial in improving treatment options and supporting better outcomes.
To celebrate the launch, the hospital welcomed former Welsh sprint and hurdling athlete Colin Jackson and retired Welsh sprint athlete and television presenter Jamie Baulch, who visited the hospital’s Advanced Diagnostics department and helped officially start the programme.
Colin Jackson said:
“It was a pleasure to visit St Joseph's Hospital and see first-hand the friendly, caring, and professional staff who make visits and procedures far less stressful. The knowledge and expertise across the team gives you confidence that you are in the right hands and supported throughout the process. I would highly recommend the experience and environment at St Joseph’s Hospital.”
Jamie Baulch said:
“My experience at St Joseph’s Hospital was fantastic. From start to finish, I felt truly looked after by professionals. With one in three Black men and one in eight men overall facing prostate cancer, this cutting-edge pathway leads the way, giving peace of mind and ensuring we’re proactive in case something develops.”
Rachel Davies, Advanced Diagnostics Lead, said:
“It was fantastic to have two well-known and respected former athletes help launch this service. Supporting the community and raising awareness about the importance of prostate health checks is key—particularly for men at higher risk, including Black men aged 45 and over, and White men aged 50 and over. It was a pleasure to welcome them to our Advanced Diagnostics department, show them our work, and support them through the scanning process.”
The launch of the Prostate Health Check demonstrates St Joseph’s Hospital’s ongoing commitment to advanced diagnostics, early detection, and accessible, high-quality care for patients and the wider community.
