Professional bio

Ian Mackie qualified in medicine at the Westminster Hospital Medical School London in 1974. The Westminster Hospital has since been amalgamated with the Imperial College Medical School.

He has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for 34 years. His formal Orthopaedic training was in The University of Wales Medical School Cardiff under the tutelage of the world-famous academic Professor McKibbin.

Further specialist training at the Princess Alexandra Teaching Hospital in Brisbane in all aspects of Hand and upper limb surgery as well as microvascular surgery and all aspects of Hip and Knee surgery with the eminent surgeon Mr. Mervyn Cross in Sydney. Upon his return to the U.K., he was appointed Senior Lecturer to Professor McKibbin.Then working with Dr. later Professor Nokes they founded the M.Sc, in Orthopaedic Engineering in Cardiff which has become an essential qualification for training Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Consequent upon founding the course and extensive publications in Bioengineering and Orthopaedics he was appointed visiting Professor of Mechanical Systems to the Mechanical Engineering department in Cardiff University.

His Clinical work involved all aspects of Traumatic and Elective surgery with special emphasis on hand, hip, and knee surgery including Primary and Revision hip and knee surgery. He left Cardiff and joined The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in 1995 and has continued to specialise in this work to the present time.

Ian, together with Mervyn Cross and David Schwartz described a test to diagnose a ruptured Anterior Cruciate ligament in the acute knee immediately after injury to prevent further damage. Also, he developed an operation on the knee to reattach separated bone within the knee {an osteochondral fracture}  using the arthroscope (TELESCOPE) and a specialised screw (Herbert screw) to reattach the bone and allow it to grow normally.
 

Ian is an Intercollegiate Examiner for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons. He achieved the award of “going the extra mile” from the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for his care of Patients and help and support to colleagues and all members of staff.

Personal Profile

Ian has had enormous support and encouragement from Judith having been married almost 45 years and their Four children and latterly three grandchildren. He lives on a farm in Herefordshire where sheep and beef are the main enterprises.

Ian's hobbies are trout fishing being a member of the Crickhowell Angling society, and Clay Pidgeon shooting where he has represented Wales in the Home International Events. Also in 2010, he was a member of the three-man Welsh team that Obtained the Bronze medal in the European DTL Championships.
