Professional bio
Mr Gareth Llewelyn Roberts is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a dedicated specialist interest in hip conditions — from early hip problems in young active patients through to complex hip replacement. He sees patients at St Joseph's Hospital Newport, with his NHS practice at the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
Hip preservation surgery is a core focus of Mr Roberts's practice. He provides a regional specialist service for patients with hip dysplasia and hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement / FAI), offering periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) — a complex pelvic surgery to correct hip socket alignment — as well as hip arthroscopy with labral repair and FAI correction. These treatments are aimed at preserving the natural hip joint, relieving pain, and reducing the risk of early arthritis, particularly in younger and more active patients.
For patients with hip arthritis requiring total hip replacement, Mr Roberts offers both the traditional posterior approach and the Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) — a muscle-sparing technique that avoids cutting through the gluteal muscles, enabling faster recovery and earlier return to activity. The anterior approach can be performed through a bikini incision, placing the scar in a skin crease for a more cosmetically discreet result. He is trained and experienced in robotic-assisted hip replacement using the MAKO system, which uses 3D pre-operative planning and real-time feedback to achieve highly accurate implant positioning.
Mr Roberts trained in Wales, with fellowships in Bristol and London, and has visited leading hip surgeons across Europe and the United States. He holds a research doctorate (MD) and remains actively engaged with the latest evidence in hip surgery.
He consults with patients from across South Wales, Herefordshire, and the Bristol and South Gloucestershire area — St Joseph's Hospital is conveniently located just off the M4 at Newport, typically under 40 minutes from Bristol.
Whatever your hip problem — whether you are a young person recently diagnosed with dysplasia or impingement, or someone with established arthritis exploring replacement options — Mr Roberts will take the time to explain your condition clearly and discuss every appropriate treatment option with you.
