Mr Mckain qualified in 1986 at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica having been granted the Jamaica Centenary Scholarship to study Medicine. This is granted to one candidate in the country every 2 years for academic excellence.
As a Junior Surgeon in Jamaica the sheer volume of the workload enabled Mr Mckain to obtain a broad range of surgical skills over a wide range of surgical specialities complemented by robust training in the art of scientific surgery.
Mr Mckain came to Britain in 1991 and completed final fellowship examinations in surgery FRCS (Glasg) in 1993. Mr Mckain was selected to enter the Welsh Surgical Training Programme and also did research in Molecular Genetics of colorectal cancer at the University of Swansea.
As the local trail coordinator for West Glamorgan, Mr Mckain participated in a national bowel screening trial using flexible sigmoidoscopy, competing with the Faecal Occult Blood test (FIT test). This role helped develop exceptional skills in flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy under strict quality controls, involving thousands of clients with a single endoscopist.
Mr Mckain's further surgical training was based in both North and South Wales with increasing emphasis in general and colorectal surgery. Mr Mckain became a Consultant in General and Colorectal Surgery in ABUHB in 2004, operating in Royal Gwent Hospital, Neville Hall Hospital, Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, and more recently the Grange University Hospital since its inception in 2020.
Mr Mckain has engaged in private practise exclusively at St Joseph’s Private Hospital since 2004.
