Mr David MacDonald Joseph Owens is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales, a position he has held since 2011. He graduated in medicine from the University of Leicester and completed his postgraduate ENT training in Wales, achieving Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Otolaryngology (FRCSEd ORL-HNS). He also holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) from Swansea University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from Cardiff University, and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers.
His clinical practice encompasses the full breadth of general otolaryngology, including paediatric ENT, nasal and sinus disease, ear and balance disorders, and throat, voice, and swallowing conditions. He provides comprehensive assessment, diagnostic expertise, and both medical and surgical management across a wide range of ENT conditions.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Owens has held several senior leadership roles at the University Hospital of Wales, including Clinical Director, Research Lead for ENT, and Education Lead for ENT. He is currently Foundation Programme Director and a Clinical Appraiser, with a strong commitment to training and mentoring the next generation of doctors.
Mr Owens is actively involved in national professional organisations. He sits on the Specialist Advisory Committee for ENT at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and serves as Regional Advisor for Wales on the ENT UK Council. He has also contributed extensively to surgical education and training through roles in curriculum development, e-learning, and examining and is currently the Foundation Programme Director in his Health Board.
He has a strong research background, having completed an MPhil focused on nasal airflow and the evaluation of septal surgery. He has acted as Principal Investigator or local lead on multiple national and international studies, including trials in head and neck cancer, otitis media, and necrotising otitis externa. He has published widely, with many peer-reviewed papers across a broad range of ENT topics.
Mr Owens is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, alongside contributing to research, education, and the ongoing development of ENT services at both regional and national levels.
