Professional bio

I am presently a gastroenterologist based at the Royal Gwent Hospital. I started my Gastroenterology training in East Yorkshire in 2000. In 2001 I moved to South Wales and trained in Newport and Cardiff. In 2005 I joined the Royal Gwent Hospital as a Consultant Gastroenterologist, with sessions with sessions at YYF. I am a luminal Gastroenterologist and Advanced endoscopist. I am an accredited Colonoscopist for Bowel Cancer Screening. I am an expert in mucosal visualisation techniques including Trimodal Imaging for Barrett's Oesophagus, Chromoendoscopy for colitis screening. I am the Clinical Lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease for ABHB. We have three IBD Clinical Nurse Specialists across the Health Board with dedicated IBD clinics. We have also set up multidisciplinary IBD meetings with our surgical colleagues for managing complicated IBD patients.

My speciality areas include Ulcerative Colitis, Crohns Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac Disease/Food allergy, Short Bowel Syndrome, GastroOesophageal Reflux disease, Barrett's Oesophagus, Oesophageal Cancer Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer, Colorectal cancer, Endoscopy, Gastroscopy, Trimodal Imaging and Acetic Acid spray for Barrett's Oesophagus, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Colonoscopy, Colonoscopic Polypectomy, Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), Chromoendoscopy, dye spray colonoscopy, Endoscopic Ultrasound.

I have been a Gastroenterologist for 12 years. I have performed thousands of gastroscopies, colonoscopies over the years. I also have done many polyp removal procedures and specialize in Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) for complex, large polyps (am the lead for these procedures in the Royal Gwent Hospital. My area of interest is mucosal imaging and I am an expert on dye spray, acetic acid spray and other mucosal enhancement techniques for Colitis surveillance and Barrett's surveillance which assists in early cancer detection.

I am the Clinical Lead for IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) for Aneurin Bevan Health Board leading a group of gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, dietitians and pharmacists involved in IBD care.

I am a member of the LNC of Aneurin Bevan Health Board. This is a committee of elected representatives of the senior doctors who liaise with senior management of the health board. I am the Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology (TPD) for Wales. I also represent Wales on the UKwide Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) which is responsible and regulates Gastroenterology training in the UK.

Physician trainees have to pass the MRCP exam to enter specialist training programme. I host the MRCP PACES exam for our trainees and am a PACES examiner for the Royal College of Physicians. I am on the Question writing board for Gastroenterology exit exam (Royal College of Physicians) which all trainees have to pass before they can complete their Gastroenterology training and are allowed to practice independently.
