Professional bio

Dr Atwan completed medical school in 2003 then pursued academic and research degrees in clinical dermatology at Cardiff University, where he completed Diploma, MSc and Medical Doctorates degrees. He also holds the European Board in Dermatology and Venereology, and the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration in the UK. 

Dr Atwan worked as a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Dermatology at Cardiff University / University Hospital of Wales from 2008 to 2017. During this time, he was the Director of the MSc programme and supervised and examined over 20 MSc research theses. Dr Atwan has published 2 book chapters and over 20 research papers in medical journals. He has also delivered several talks as an invited speaker in national and international meetings. 

Dr Atwan joined the dermatology department at the Royal Gwent Hospital in 2017. He is competent in the diagnosis and management of all skin conditions, with special interest in skin cancers. He is a national expert in dermoscopy (a safe tool used to examine moles and skin lesions) and performs over 300 skin surgeries a year.

Currently, Dr Atwan is a full-time consultant in Newport and is the national clinical lead for the Teledermoscopy services in Wales. He is also a member of the British Association of Dermatologists Teledermatology Working Group, and a UK Board Member of the International Dermoscopy Society.

Personal Profile

Dr Atwan spent several years of his life in different countries before he settled in South Wales in 2006. This life-experience helped him to be humble, open-minded and resilient. He is a lucky husband and a proud father of two beautiful children; his family is his best reminder of what life is all about! Dr Atwan loves exploring new cultures, countries and traditions, and is fortunate to have visited over 25 countries (so far).
