St Joseph’s Hospital’s Sustainability Pledge
Date Posted: 19th September 2025

At St Joseph’s Hospital in Newport, we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact and building a more sustainable future.
Our clinical teams are already recognised for innovative healthcare approaches and outstanding success rates in advanced diagnostics, hip replacements, knee replacements, cataract surgery, and physiotherapy – and now, we are committed to becoming a leading healthcare organisation when it comes to sustainability.
One of the biggest changes we’ve made so far is switching to reusable products, and it’s already making a real difference.
To date, we’ve reduced our waste by over half a tonne, with a further 1.7 tonnes already identified and in progress. To put that into perspective, that’s roughly the same as:
· 2,800 loaves of bread
· 900 reams of A4 paper
· 2 mature bison
· 1 adult male giraffe
It’s a big step forward: but it’s only the beginning.
Currently, this reduction represents about 2% of all non-clinical waste produced at the hospital, which means there’s still plenty of opportunity to go further. Our recycling rates currently sit at around 50%, but our goal is to reach 60% and beyond.
Sustainability is a shared effort, and every small action adds up to a big impact. As we continue this journey, we’ll be introducing new initiatives and sharing updates on our progress with our teams and patients.
