St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport, successfully hosted its first-ever CT Study Day on Saturday 7th June, welcoming specialist radiographers from across Wales and beyond. The event marked the hospital’s third annual study day for radiographers — following two previous MRI-focused CPD events — and was held in recognition of the installation of a new, state-of-the-art CT suite featuring a Canon Aquilion One/Insight Edition scanner and Centargo Medrad power injector.

Sponsored by Canon Medical Systems and Bayer, the complimentary event provided delegates with a full day of high-quality educational content, peer networking opportunities, and exclusive access to St Joseph’s advanced diagnostic imaging facilities.

Laura Taylor, Specialist Radiographer and event organiser, commented:
“Events of this nature are an essential component of ongoing professional development, yet in-person educational opportunities remain limited in Wales. We are immensely grateful to our sponsors and colleagues for enabling us to deliver such a successful day.”

The programme featured a diverse line-up of distinguished speakers from across the UK. The day commenced with Stuart Baines, Consultant Radiographer at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, who delivered an insightful session on CT head reporting, drawing on his extensive clinical experience.

Dr John Dreisbach, a radiologist based in Glasgow, delivered one of the day’s standout presentations, focusing on advanced and emergency cardiac CT. His session featured high-resolution 3D reconstructions and a range of complex clinical case studies, offering valuable insights into the diagnostic potential of CT in acute cardiac care.
Mr Hariharan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, shared his perspective on the role of CT imaging in preoperative planning and surgical precision, particularly in relation to ankle replacement surgery.

Dr Sue Kearney, a radiologist from Lancashire and contributor to Channel 5’s Cause of Death, provided an engaging presentation on post-mortem CT, highlighting its growing relevance within forensic imaging.

Cardiovascular imaging was further explored by Dr Obaid from Morriston Hospital, who delivered a comprehensive overview of cardiac pathology. His presentation reinforced the ongoing collaborative relationship between St Joseph’s and NHS Wales cardiac services.
The event concluded with presentations from Canon and Bayer, followed by a guided tour of St Joseph’s imaging department. Delegates had the opportunity to view the newly installed Canon Insight CT scanner and Bayer Centargo injector, and to engage with members of the hospital’s advanced diagnostics team.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Laura Taylor added:
“Beyond supporting CPD, events like this foster cross-organisational collaboration, stimulate service innovation, and provide a platform to showcase the exceptional work taking place at St Joseph’s. We extend our sincere thanks to our speakers, sponsors, the wider St Joe’s team, and all those who joined us — especially those who gave up their personal time to attend.”

Looking ahead, the team aims to further expand its educational offering with additional CPD events, including evening lectures and half-day workshops, to continue building on the success of the study day series.
