Date Posted: 4th January 2024

Over recent years there has been a rise in the uptake of mind-body exercises such as Pilates. Taking part in such activities can enhance not only your physical health but your mental health and self-awareness too.

St Joseph’s Hospital has a team of APPI Pilates trained, qualified Physiotherapists, who teach Pilates classes alongside their specialist clinics. With the aim to continue supporting patients in rehabilitation and work with those looking to strengthen their body and mind, our team promote taking time out of your day to be present with yourself and spend some quality time on the mat.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise which aims to strengthen the body, with particular emphasis on the core strength aiming to improve general fitness and well-being.

Taking part in regular movement, such as Pilates, can help improve your posture, muscle tone, balance and joint mobility. It can also work on your mental health by relieving stress and tension that is built up inside you. Whether you’ve had a busy day at work or running errands, taking the time to be present and focus on you is of great value.

Pilates involves a series of exercises and holding different positions, with varying degrees of difficulty. The aim is for the exercises to be challenging and shouldn’t push past this point and become painful.

Is Pilates suitable for me?

The great thing about Pilates is that is has something to offer for people of all ages and levels of ability. Whether you are recovering from surgery, an injury or looking to improve you overall strength, our team can adapt the movements to suit you.

There is evidence that Pilates can provide pain relief to those suffering from non-specific low back pain, as well as other common musculoskeletal complaints.

At St Joseph’s Hospital, all levels of experience are welcome. We are here to support you through your journey.
