Professional bio

Ms Popiela is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales with a specialist interest in cornea and anterior segment. 

Ms Popiela graduated from Edinburgh University in 2007, before completing specialist ophthalmic training in Wales. She has also undertaken a fellowship in one of the leading UK corneal transplant centres; the Southampton University Hospital. 

Previously Ms Popiela worked as an Ophthalmic consultant and clinical lead in Gibraltar, where she performed the very first corneal transplant and introduced anterior segment services. 

As well as specialsing in general Ophthalmology, Ms Popiela has significant experience in cataract surgery in patients with corneal disease, previous refractive surgery, vision enhancing lens surgery, corneal transplants, pterygium removal and medical management of ocular surface diseases.  

Currently, Ms Popiela is the Deputy Clinical Director for the Ophthalmology Department at the University Hospital of Wales and is a Director for Vale Eye Surgeons. Throughout Ms Popiela's career she has achieved several prestigious awards for research projects and obtained a master’s degree in Cataract and Refractive surgery from Ulster University.

Ms Popiela has also established a relationship with Cardiff University Optometry School.
