Spinal and Neurosurgery

St Joseph’s Hospital treats an extensive range of spinal disorders and has gained an excellent reputation for its high standards of surgery and aftercare.

Our spinal surgeons work within a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team which includes specialist consultant radiologists, pain medicine consultants, spinal consultant anaesthetists, skilled nurses and specialist physiotherapists.

Diagnosis, from history, examination and imaging helps your consultant provide reassurance and outline potenital treatment strategies for the whole range of spinal conditions.

Most patients need sensible guidance, reassurance and explanation to help them to understand and manage their pain without the need for intervention. At St Joseph's we undertake all aspects of spinal surgery.

The conditions we treat include:

  • spinal injuries
  • back pain
  • scoliosis
  • spinal deformity
  • spinal tumours
  • disc prolapse

The spinal column extends from the skull to the pelvis.  There are 33 individual bones, vertebrae which form the spinal column.  The spine has several functions, most importantly; it protects the spinal cord, allows mobility, supports your head and allows for balance and weight distribution, it is a base for attachment of ligaments, tendons and muscles.

The vertebrae are positioned one on top of each other and are separated by discs which act as shock absorbers.  The spinal cord and nerves allow messages to travel from the brain to other areas of your body, e.g. the muscles of your legs.  The discs, vertebrae, nerves, ligaments, muscles and joints in a healthy back should all work together to allow for mobility whilst maintaining stability.

We offer minimally-invasive spinal surgery, microdiscectomy, degenerative lumbar/cervical spine, rheumatoid spine, nerve root treatments, spinal tumours, peripheral nerve entrapment and muscle biopsy. When one or more nerves in your spine are put under pressure they can cause pain; spinal surgery may be performed to relieve some of this pressure.

We offer the diagnostic capability to identify spinal conditions at St Joseph's hospital. We have a fully-comprehensive imaging department including CT, MRI, X-ray, fluoroscopy and ultrasound.

Having any type of diagnostic intervention or surgery is always a worrying time. We’re here to help you.
