Wire localisation with ultrasound or mammographic guidance

When breast lesions cannot be felt by the surgeon, some guidance is needed in order to pinpoint it so that the correct area is removed during surgery. One patient described this procedure as ‘Sat nav for surgeons’!  A fine wire is inserted into the breast with either ultrasound or mammographic guidance and then lodged as close to the lesion as possible, prior to surgery. This wire remains in place until the surgeon removes it along with the lesion. An x-ray is then taken of the excised lump to check that the wire and the lesion are present.
