Re-excision of breast lesion if the margins around the lesion are insufficient

When a malignant lesion is removed by a wide local excision or lumpectomy, rather than a mastectomy, the pathology results afterwards show whether there is a clear margin around the cancer. If the cancer is too close to edge of the excision, the surgeon will re-operate to increase the margin to ensure that there is a good margin between cancerous tissue and normal tissue.
