Breast reconstruction

This is done when a patient has a total mastectomy, to replace the breast that has been lost. There are a number of different methods for performing a breast reconstruction. The Breast Consultant would discuss the options with each individual patient to decide on the best treatment option for them. A reconstruction can be performed at the same time as the mastectomy or at a later date, depending on the patient’s preference, and their condition. The choice of post-surgical cancer treatments are influenced by the patient’s decision over when to have their breast reconstruction.
