Biopsy of breast lesions with ultrasound or mammographic guidance

Breast lesions that need further diagnostic consideration to determine their nature, are biopsied. A few samples of tissue are removed using a biopsy device. This is done using either ultrasound or mammographic guidance. Local anaesthetic is injected first so that there is no pain. The samples of tissue are then sent to the histopathology laboratory to be checked under a microscope to provide the correct diagnosis.
