A cyst is a benign fluid-filled lesion in the breast. Cysts can be very painful, but not all cysts are painful. They can be simply and quickly drained of the fluid which sits inside the cyst and should not cause any further concern. A mammogram and/or ultrasound is needed to diagnose breast cysts. They tend to develop due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly leading up to, and during the menopause. They can recur during this period.
