At six weeks the purpose of the early viability ultrasound scan is to confirm a fetal heartbeat and exclude an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes which can be dangerous for the mother. If you have unexpected bleeding which is extremely distressing then at BabyConnections we can provide you with an immediate appointment, usually on the same day, for your ultrasound scan giving you much needed reassurance.

After 6-7 weeks gestation we also aim to:

  • to confirm that there is a fetal heartbeat
  • to confirm the presence of a single baby or multiple babies
  • to provide an estimated due date (EDD)
  • to provide reassurance to the mother and family that the pregnancy is developing as expected
  • to check the mother’s ovaries

Most early viability scans can be performed by scanning through your tummy (trans-abdominally) when you are six weeks gestation or greater, however if the pregnancy is earlier than expected or the ultrasound picture is unclear we would recommend you have a trans-vaginal scan (TV) with your consent.  This is an internal scan in which our Sonographer will place a small probe into your vaginal cavity to assess your fetus and pelvic structures in more detail.

For a small group of patients we realise that the elation at finding out you are pregnant can also be accompanied with feelings of uncertainty and apprehension especially if you have had difficulties in the past with conceiving and miscarriage.  The Early Pregnancy Support package is designed to support you throughout this time by providing regular reassurance ultrasound scans that give you a fantastic opportunity to see your baby growing week on week.

Our early pregnancy support packages are fully customisable, however the three main packages we offer are:

At each scan date we aim to:

  • provide an estimated due date (EDD)
  • provide reassurance to the mother and family that the pregnancy is developing as expected
  • check the mother’s ovaries

Most obstetric ultrasound scans can be performed by scanning through your tummy (trans-abdominally) when you are six weeks gestation or greater, however if the pregnancy is earlier than expected or the ultrasound picture is unclear we would recommend you have a trans-vaginal scan (TV) with your consent. This is an internal scan in which our Sonographer will place a small probe into you vaginal cavity to assess your fetus and pelvic structures in more detail.

Dating scans are the most accurate way of predicting your due date and working out how many weeks pregnant you are.

The aim of the Dating scan is:

  • to provide you with a more accurate Estimated Due Date (EDD) and fetal gestational age
  • to confirm the presence of a single or multiple babies
  • to ensure the fetus is not ectopic
  • to confirm that there is a fetal heartbeat
  • to provide reassurance to the mother and family that the pregnancy is developing as expected and assess the baby’s well being
  • provide a second opinion if one is required

In addition we provide:

  • assessment of the mother’s pelvic structures
  • reassurance for mothers who have had difficulties conceiving or previous miscarriage
  • reassurance for mothers who have had bleeding with an immediate appointment usually on the same day for your ultrasound scan

A gender or sexing scan is becoming very popular here in the UK.  Using 2D ultrasound our qualified Sonographer will offer their professional opinion and show you the gender if your baby.  Ultrasound is very accurate but not 100% accurate in determining the gender of a baby.

If at the time the baby is in a difficult position for the Sonographer to determine the gender, we ask you to go for a gentle walk to try and move baby, drink something or have something sugary to eat.  We will resume the scan after your stroll.  On some occasions the baby will not have moved to a sufficient position, therefore we offer a complimentary re-scan on an alternative day to suit you.

At BabyConnections we offer two gender scan packages to choose from:

Gender determination - Silver

  • 20 minute scan appointment
  • Sonographer’s formal report
  • 2 thermal black and white paper images

Cost: £40

We kindly ask you to pay a 30% deposit on booking your appointment over the phone.  This will be deducted from your overall balance to be paid on arrival to St Joseph’s Hospital reception.

Gender determination - Gold

Additional benefits:

  • 20 minute scan appointment
  • Sonographer’s formal report
  • 4 thermal black and white paper images
  • 1 glossy photograph in 2D or 3D to take away with you if the baby is in a suitable position.
  • wellbeing assessment of your baby which looks at the stomach, bladder, head and provides femur length measurements – peace of mind that your baby is developing as expected
  • reassurance for mothers who have had difficulties conceiving or previous miscarriage
  • a complimentary peek at your developing baby in 3D (baby position permitting.  This showcases our fantastic ultrasound software and the potential benefits of our 4D bonding scan.  This is not a formal scan and if the baby is not in a good position the sonographer will not persist indefinitely.

Cost: £80

We kindly ask you to pay a 30% deposit on booking your appointment over the phone.  This will be deducted from your overall balance to be paid on arrival to St Joseph’s Hospital reception.

The fetal anomaly scan (sometimes called an anatomy scan) is offered as part of your NHS ultrasound evaluation at 20 weeks.  BabyConnections is not looking to replace NHS scans, rather to complement them.  This scan is particularly useful if you would like a second opinion or would like further reassurance.

Purpose

During the fetal anomaly scan a highly trained Sonographer will check your baby for major structural abnormalities and evaluate the baby’s development and growth.  It is a detailed examination of the internal organs including the heart, stomach, kidneys, bowel and brain as well as the spine and limbs.  We will check the amount of fluid around the baby and also the appearance of the placenta.  The anomaly scan gives us another opportunity to tell you the gender of your baby (if you would like to know) - although ultrasound is extremely accurate, we can never be 100% certain.

During the course of the scan, if factors are affecting the Sonographer’s ability to obtain optimal images, we will advise you to take a short, gentle walk to try and move baby. Sometimes having water, tea or a surgery drink can help.

Anomaly scan

  • 30 minute scan appointment
  • detailed Sonographer formal report
  • 4 thermal black and white paper Images
  • 1 glossy photo
  • we will assess the sex of your baby for free should you require this.
  • a complimentary peek at your developing baby in 3D (scan result and baby position permitting).  A 2D or 3D glossy photo to take away with you if the baby is in a suitable position.  This showcases our fantastic ultrasound software and the potential benefits of our 4D bonding scan.

Cost:  £180

We kindly ask you to pay a 30% deposit on booking your appointment over the phone.  This will be deducted from your overall balance to be paid on arrival to St Joseph’s Hospital reception.

Additional Information

Anomaly scans are unable to exclude chromosomal variants, such as Downs, Edwards, cystic fibrosis. The scan is also unable to fully exclude minor structural problems e.g. small cleft lip, ventricular septal defects (VSDs), skin lesions, eye and ear defects. Also problems that can occur later in pregnancy such as development of hydrocephalus, hydronephrosis, and positional talipes cannot be fully excluded.

Purpose and background

3D and 4D obstetric ultrasound scanning is not available on the NHS and delivered as part of your obstetric care.  This is where BabyConnections can offer you and your family an inspirational treat.

3D scans show your baby literally in three dimensions! 4D scans show baby moving in 3D, you can have the opportunity to capture this amazing glimpse of your baby’s world on video for you to take home to treasure and share with family and friends.  We actively encourage you to bring your family in with you to share this potentially once in a lifetime experience.

Unlike the 2D scans which show baby’s internal organs, 3D and 4D scans show baby’s skin and face.  You can see baby’s nose, mouth, catch a smile or even capture baby yawning or sucking their hand.   With revolutionary imaging technology, our aim is to ensure your scan experience is of the highest quality. Our qualified Sonographers will do their upmost to provide a relaxed, friendly, reassuring bonding experience for you and your guests.

Of course, if you are having a surprise, we will not reveal baby’s gender.  The secret is safe with our Sonographers.  If you would like us to check your baby’s gender, please ask, however remember it is not 100% accurate.

During the course of the scan if factors such as the baby’s position affect the Sonographer’s ability to obtain fantastic images, we will advise you to take a short, gentle walk to try and move the baby.  Sometimes having water, tea or a surgery drink can help.  If the baby hasn’t moved after your walk and drink, we will offer you another opportunity to return for a complimentary scan.

Preparation for scans

You may find it beneficial to wear a loose fitting top and either trousers or a skirt.  We will protect your clothes with tissue during your scan.

A full bladder is not needed for your 3D/4D scan, however like all baby scans, the amount of fluid around the baby can assist with clearer pictures.  Research does show that hydration increases the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby.  Clarity is also dependent on factors such as the baby’s position, fluid around baby, the placental location and also the mother’s weight.

We have two 4D bonding scan packages available:

4D bonding - Gold

  • 30 minute scan appointment
  • 4 thermal black and white paper images
  • we will assess the sex of your baby for free should you wish
  • 2 glossy 3D colour photographs

We kindly ask you to pay a 30% deposit on booking your appointment over the phone.  This will be deducted from your overall balance to be paid on arrival to St Joseph’s Hospital reception.

Twins Cost: £200

We kindly ask you to pay a 30% deposit on booking your appointment over the phone.  This will be deducted from your overall balance to be paid on arrival to St Joseph’s Hospital reception.

Purpose

The growth of baby scans after 24 weeks are there for families who want to keep an eye on their baby’s development, wellbeing, assess the level of amniotic fluid (fluid around your baby) and also check the placenta.

After the anomaly scan at 20-24 weeks no more routine ultrasound scans are provided in the NHS environment.  The growth of baby scan allows you to check-in with your baby periodically at your convenience.  These scans are also a great opportunity to physically see your little baby growing, and a lot can change in a few weeks!

These scans are performed as either a one scan, two scan (24 weeks and 32 weeks) or a four scan package (24 weeks, 28 weeks, 32 weeks and 36 weeks).

Within this 20 minute scan appointment, a qualified and experienced Sonographer will check on your baby's development and well-being.   You will be encouraged to ask any questions you may have to get the most out of your experience.

Size measurements will be taken of your baby and compared with expected measurements for their age to check your baby’s growth is on track.  These measurements are more accurate than measurements taken of your ‘bump’ by your midwife and can give an idea of expected weight of your baby.

The position of your baby can be assessed which is very useful to know as it is getting close to your baby’s due date.  It is important to know sooner rather than later if your baby is a breech (feet first) presentation.

The placental position is determined, blood flow assessed and a detailed report is provided for you to take home which can provide your midwife and consultant with useful information about you and your baby’s health.

If the position of your baby allows, 3D views of your baby can be attempted however please be aware that sometimes obtaining these images is difficult and not possible in the later stages of pregnancy.
We have three growth of baby packages available:

  • 1 x 20 minute scan appointment at 24 weeks+

  • we will assess the sex of your baby for free should you wish

Cost: £280

We kindly ask you to pay a 30% deposit on booking your appointment over the phone.  This will be deducted from your overall balance to be paid on arrival to St Joseph’s Hospital reception.

Purpose

The baby and wellbeing scans after 36 weeks are there for families who want to keep an eye on their baby’s development, check their baby’s wellbeing, assess the fluid around the baby and assess the placenta in terms of structure and blood flow.  An important benefit of these scans is that as you near your due date we assess the fetal position and whether the baby is breech in presentation (feet first).  The post-date period (after 40 weeks and you are overdue) can be a time of concern and we are here to reassure you should you require it.

Additional benefits

  • the ultrasound scan is very accurate in assessing your baby’s weight (estimated fetal weight – EFW) rather than relying on your midwife to estimate the weight by touch alone
  • check the blood flow between the baby and the placenta (a Doppler scan)
  • assess the level of amniotic fluid around your baby
  • provide re-assurance that baby is developing well

Baby wellbeing and presentation scan

  • 20 minute appointment
  • 4 thermal black and white images
  • detailed sonographer’s report on your baby’s development, printed to take away with you
  • 1 x glossy 2D photograph

Cost: £80

All Obstetric Ultrasound scans performed in St Joseph’s Hospital are undertaken by a fully trained Sonographer with extensive obstetric scanning experience. We pride ourselves in going ‘the extra yard’ for all our patients so if we can make your experience any better please don’t hesitate to bring this to the attention of our caring and friendly staff.

The combined test (NT ultrasound scan and blood test) are carried out between 11 weeks 2 days and 14 weeks 1 day gestation. Factors such as maternal age, the amount of fluid underneath the skin at the back of the baby’s neck (nuchal translucency) and two hormones (B-hCG and PAPP-A) are used to calculate the risk of the baby having one of these conditions. If the risk is more than 1:150 then a follow on diagnostic test such as Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS from 11-14 weeks) or Amniocentesis (after 15 weeks) may be required.

NT scans will be available at your local NHS hospital and at St Joseph’s we do not look to replace these appointments but compliment them with second opinions, repeat scans if the NHS NT scan was unsuccessful.

Your blood test results, nuchal thickness measurement and other maternal information are combined to determine your individual risk factor with 90-95% accuracy. Results are available approximately 3 to 5 working days after your appointment. We recommend that the NT results are given to your midwife and obstetric doctor to be added to your NHS patient record for continuity.

The aim of the combined NT scan is:

  • To provide you with a more accurate Estimated Due Date (EDD) and fetal gestational age
  • Assess nuchal thickness measurement, patients age, weight and other maternal factors
  • To ensure the fetus is not ectopic
  • To confirm that there is a fetal heartbeat
  • To provide reassurance to the mother and family that the pregnancy is developing as expected and assess the baby’s well being
  • To give a second opinion if required

In addition at St Joseph’s we provide:

  • Perform a blood test (included in price)
  • Assessment of the mothers pelvic structures
  • Reassurance for mothers who have had difficulties conceiving or previous miscarriage
  • Reassurance for mothers who have had bleeding with an immediate appointment usually on the same day for your ultrasound scan

Most NT scans can be performed by scanning through your tummy (trans-abdominally), however if the ultrasound picture is unclear we may recommend you have a trans-vaginal scan (TV) with your consent. This is an internal scan in which our sonographer will place a small probe into you vaginal cavity to assess your foetus and pelvic structures in more detail. In order to achieve optimal scan pictures and clear results we ask you to drink 1 pint of water 1 hour before your appointment time and not to empty your bladder before the scan. For your comfort if we could ask you to wear a skirt/trousers and a top which are loose fitting. NT combined scan
