Professional profile

I am a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon having worked for Aneurin Bevan Health Board since 1990 and retired from NHS practice in 2014. I see and treat private patients at St Joseph's Hospital. Initially I practiced General Surgery with a Vascular interest but as specialization developed I became a Specialist in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in 2003.

I introduced many first in Wales Vascular procedures including Distal Vascular insitu leg bypass and Suprarenal Aneurysm repair (1992) Local Eversion Carotid Endarterectomy(1996), Endovascular Aneurysm repair (1999), Endovenous Laser and Radiofrequency ablation of Varicose veins(2003). I established the first Vascular Laboratory for duplex scanning (1994) and the Vascular Institute (2005).

I have extensive experience in Surgical and Vascular training and education since 1992 having served as Royal College of Surgeons Tutor, Regional Advisor Royal College of Surgeons, Chair of Higher Surgical Training Committee, Member of Council of Association of Surgeons, Member of Scientific Committee ASGBI, Inter-collegiate RCS Examiner for 16 years. I have trained generations of Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons both in the UK and abroad and continue to train mainly in Endovenous procedures both in the UK but particularly abroad in Asia and Africa.

In addition I have been involved with Quality Assurance of training and services in the following roles:

Quality Assurance Lead School of Surgery, Wales Deanery; Faculty lead Quality of Training Health Education and Improvement Wales; Specialist Advisor Care Quality Commission.

My primary Medical degree (1975) and Doctorate (1987) were both awarded by the Welsh National School of Medicine. I became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons England in 1980.I trained in Wales, Bristol and Southampton. I spent a year as Clinical Vascular Fellow in Albany Medical College, Albany, New York and awarded a Fullbright Scholarship.
