Professional bio

Dr Yaqoob Bhat is a Consultant stroke Physician and Clinical Director of stroke services at Aneurin Bevan Health Board based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport. He sees his private patients at St Joseph's Hospital.

Dr Bhat has worked within the NHS for many years and is a very experienced consultant in the management of all areas of stroke medicine.

His interests and expertise include TIA, Stroke management including stroke rehabilitation.  His main expertise including management of post-stroke complications such as spasticity, fatigue, post-stroke seizures, pain, continence and depression. He has cared for patients of all ages with complex physical and cognitive disabilities for many years and is skilled in long term care of patients with complex needs and end of life care.

Dr Bhat is passionate about delivering high-quality patient-centred specialist care and communicating well with patients, relatives and the wider multidisciplinary team in order to maximise the patient’s quality of life in all areas including returning to work and driving assessments.

Dr Bhat has designed, implemented and lead a number of stroke improvement projects that improved patient care, created efficiencies and received many awards and received recognition in national media. He regularly gives expert opinion on stroke-related articles in international newspapers.

Furthermore, through his role, he is a prominent member of the Stroke Implementation Group advising the government and implementing policy changes

Some leadership projects:

  • 24/7 thrombolysis service in ABUHB.
  • New Stroke Service Redesign Programme  started in 2016 
  • Development of Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU).
  • Consistently showing improvement in SSNAP audit remains the best performing stroke unit in Wales.
  • Spearheaded a successful bid for the Patient and Family Centred Care, ‘Living Well to the Very End’ programme. This lead to the development and implementation of the Health Board’s first end of life care pathway to further the experience of family and patients in a very difficult time.
  • Leading on strop a stroke project in ABUHB for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. The idea is to target 2000 untreated high-risk atrial fibrillation patients and managing them will aim to prevent around 400 strokes in ABUHB.
