Gareth is a consultant neurologist based in south-east Wales. Brought up in north Wales, he studied medicine in Cardiff and returned to Wales after 12 years of neurology research and training in London.
He has established a new acute neurology service in Gwent, which supports the medical intake and is integrated with the stroke service. He has also developed a tertiary peripheral nerve service, and he is clinical lead of the Wales Neuromuscular Network, which brings together the specialist skills of therapists, care advisers and clinicians across Wales. Gareth sees patients privately at St Joseph's Hospital.
Gareth is the former chair of the RCP Joint Clinical Neurosciences Committee, as well as of the Association of British Neurologists’ services and standards committee. He was instrumental in developing the neurological conditions delivery plan for Wales that was launched in 2014. He has worked closely with the Welsh language commissioner on the healthcare communication needs of Welsh-speaking children and older people.
