Arthritis

We know that arthritis can sometimes make life difficult.  We hope the following information answers some of the questions you may have about the basics of treatment, so that you understand your consultant's recommendations.  This information is not intended to replace the experience and advice of your orthopaedic surgeon.  If you have any further questions, please speak with your doctor or orthopaedic surgeon.

In its early stages, it is common for people to ignore joint discomfort.  As arthritis progresses, activities like walking, driving and standing can become challenging and painful.  The joints most commonly affected by arthritis are the knees, hips, fingers, and shoulders.  If you suffer from arthritis, you may experience pain while standing or moving which may result in decreased activity.

Often the cause of arthritis is unknown, but it may develop as a result of injury to the joint, excess body weight, or years of wear and tear on the joint cartilage.  There is no known cure and consultants endeavour to restore motion and reduce pain.  Fortunately, joint replacement has generally proven effective at accomplishing these goals.

If you suffer from joint pain or limited mobility, we encourage you to explore arthritis treatment options with your consultant to help get you back to the business of daily living.
