Elite Health Assessments

For many people, as they get older, maintaining their health assumes increasing importance. In middle aged men and women (over 40 years of age) cancer and coronary heart disease remain the two single most common causes of premature death. Fortunately, the use of modern imaging techniques can enable the early detection of these diseases and for effective treatment or preventive measures to be put in place.

The Elite Health Assessments at St Joseph’s Hospital provide a unique preventative health scanning service utilising the most advanced scanner technology available anywhere in the world. The Toshiba Aquilion One CT scanner can take incredibly detailed images of any and every part of the body to diagnose early signs of cardiac disease, cancer, neurological, abdominal and orthopaedic disease. Early diagnosis of problems enables not only timely, but often less invasive treatments.

For 1 in 7 men and 1 in 10 women die from coronary heart disease and on average 425 people die each day in the UK from cardiovascular disease. Up to 50% of individuals with coronary heart disease will not have any conventionally recognisable risk factors or symptoms.

With the Aquilion One CT scanner early signs of disease can be detected and effective preventative measures taken.

In addition to the capabilities of our Aquilion One scanner, our Vantage Titan Helios MRI, our Hologic Selenia Dimensions 3D Mammography unit and our Aplio 500 Ultrasound equipment are all world leading technologies with advanced diagnostic capabilities.

"Having played rugby at club, national and international level I understand the importance of looking after your health. We all service our cars regularly, but how often do we do the same for our bodies?

During my Platinum Elite Health Assessment, the healthcare professionals at St Joseph's explained each procedure step-by-step, so I felt comfortable at all times.

There are so many things we do in our lives that contribute to a greater risk of disease - I'm convinced preventative screening is the best way to safeguard our health."

Chairman of WRU, former Wales International and British & Irish Lion

"Having spent my career hurtling myself around race tracks at 200 miles per hour, it might come as a surprise that I am actually overtly conscious of the importance of maintaining my health both for me personally and for my family.

I have experienced 'top to toe' assessments previously, including in the States and the Elite Health Assessment exceeded them all - world leading technology coupled with a patient-focussed approach.  From the very outset I was met by a conscientious and hard-working institution where it was clear that it was the patient who was at the centre of every thought and decision.  Their professional yet personable service left me in no doubt that my health was in the best possible hands moving forward."

In September 2016, Mark Smith, the health reporter for Wales Online, underwent an Elite Health Assessment at St Joseph’s and saw first-hand how such an assessment can not only give you great insight into the workings of your own body, but also truly empower you to take control of your health and wellbeing. Follow the link below to read his report.

Our Elite Assessments are:

Elite Abdomen and Pelvis Health Assessment

The CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis images the abdominal organs including the liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys and adrenal glands, aorta, lymph glands and bladder.

These scans are very effective in screening for early tumours of any of these organs. This is especially relevant for pancreatic cancer which is notorious for presenting at a late stage when it is incurable.

Elite Bone Mineral Density Health Assessment

This is a CT examination of your hips and spine to ascertain the presence of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones).

One in three women or one in twelve men will develop osteoporosis (thin bones) after the age of 50. An estimated 3 million people in the UK suffer with this disease which can lead to disabling fractures and deformity. A CT scan is exquisitely sensitive to accurately measuring the density and therefore strength of bones at the lower spine and hip which are the two areas of the body most prone to osteoporosis and can lead to the most disabling fractures. The scan is quick and completely non-invasive.

Elite Bowel Health Assessment

Bowel or colon cancer remains the fourth most common cancer in the UK with more than 40,000 people being diagnosed each year. However, as almost all of these cancers develop from nodular polyps which gradually grow over many years, bowel cancer should be preventable through regular screening and removal of these polyps.

The NHS offers a rudimentary screening to those aged over 60 years in the form of a kit to test their faeces for microscopic amounts of blood. However, this is notoriously inaccurate and very non-specific. The most effective screening technique is by direct visualisation of the entire bowel. This can be performed either by insertion of a long fibre-optic colonoscope or via a modern CT scan of the bowel. The latter uses hundreds of images obtained from scanning the bowel to generate a virtual 'fly through' 3D colonoscopy of the entire colon.

The advantages of a CT virtual colonoscopy are:

  • avoids the need for invasive insertion of a camera
  • requires no sedation, allowing an immediate return to work or normal activities
  • is much faster
  • can visualise the entire colon - not always possible with invasive colonoscopy
  • can visualise the abdominal organs and lymph nodes as well as the inside of the bowel
  • safer with extremely low risk of perforation

Elite Brain Health Assessment

This scan examines your brain in detail to look for any tumours or other radiological abnormalities that point to early signs of dementia.

Elite Breast Health Assessment

Breast cancer is a significant concern for many women and men.

At St Joseph’s our BreastCare Centre is equipped with the most advanced mammography system available using 3D breast tomosynthesis which gives the clearest images possible at the lowest radiation dose achievable.

Elite Heart Health Assessments

Cardiovascular disease is one of the main causes of sudden death in the UK.

If you are over 40 and concerned about your diet, lifestyle, stress levels or family history, we offer you the opportunity to have your heart disease risk assessed. Our Elite Heart Assessment packages offer a comprehensive heart screening service to help diagnose unidentified heart disease and cardiac conditions.

Our programme is designed to help detect heart conditions such as cardiomyopathy or an abnormality in your heart rhythm. Using state of the art equipment and techniques we will help you understand your risk of developing coronary heart disease.

Elite Lung Health Assessment

Whether you are a smoker now, or you were earlier in your life or you have been exposed to dusty environments for prolonged periods, you may worry about whether you have suffered lung damage.

Lung cancer remains one of the most common cancers accounting for approximately 40,000 deaths a year in the UK. While smoking is the most common risk factor in lung cancer, it can, not infrequently, also occur in non-smokers. The earlier a lung cancer is detected the greater the chances of a successful cure.

Unfortunately, traditional screening techniques such a chest x-ray are very insensitive and can only diagnose cancers at a late stage when the cancer has frequently already spread and cure rates are therefore extremely low. MRI scans are not able to even visualise the chest at all and cannot screen for lung cancer.

In contrast, low dose modern CT lung scans are very sensitive and able to visualise even the smallest airways in a way that is impossible with any other technique. Lesions as small as 2mm can be detected which results in a cure rate of greater than 95%. Regular CT chest scans have been proven to reduce the death rate from lung cancer and is advocated by many authorities for smokers.

Elite Prostate Health Assessment

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year, accounting for 25% of all new male cancer cases. The incidence has tripled over the last 30 years and the annual mortality is over 10,000.

Prostate cancer usually develops slowly, so there may be no signs you have it for many years. Symptoms often only become apparent when your prostate is large enough to affect the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis).

Prostate cancer can be successfully treated provided it is detected in its early stages, but currently the NHS do not offer a screening programme.

Over recent years MRI scanning has emerged as the optimum screening technique for prostate cancer combined with a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test.

At St Joseph’s we are able to offer prostate screening utlising our advanced MRI system, coupled with a blood test to measure your PSA which is an indicator of prostate cancer cells in your prostate.

Elite Reproductive Organ Health Assessment

This is an ultrasound test for men and women to look for lumps or tumours in the testicles and scrotum in men, and to look for cysts or other abnormalities in the ovaries.

Elite Vascular System and Stroke Risk Health Assessment

In the UK, strokes are a major health problem. Every year, around 110,000 people have a stroke in England and it is the third largest cause of death, after heart diseased and cancer. The brain injuries caused by strokes are a major cause of adult disability in the UK.

Older people are most at risk of having strokes, although they can happen at any age – including in children.

If you are south Asian, African or Caribbean, your risk of stroke is higher. This is partly because of a predisposition (a natural tendency) to developing high blood pressure (hypertension), which can lead to strokes.

Smoking, being overweight, lack of exercise and a poor diet are also risk factors for stroke, as are high cholesterol, atrial fibrillation and diabetes.

Our Stroke Risk Assessment looks at your vascular system in fine detail using CT and ultrasound non-invasive imaging.

Using our advanced Aquilion One CT scanner we look into the interior of your neck and brain arteries to assess any narrowing ('furring up') or abnormalities which increases your risk of stroke or haemorrhage.

We use ultrasound to assess your aorta for early signs of dilation which could be the early signs on an aneurysm.

Utilising our advanced ultrasound systems we examine your carotid neck arteries to look for possible narrowing or blood flow problems which could increase your risk of a stroke.

The Elite Health Assessment packages offered at St Joseph's Hospital combine all of the above assessments and more into comprehensive top to toe packages.

The Elite Health Assessments consist of the following tests:

Blood tests

The full blood assessment will measure more than 40 parameters, including:

  • full blood count (anaemia)
  • kidney, liver and bone function
  • thyroid function
  • full lipid profile (cholesterol, lipoproteins, triglycerides)
  • iron levels
  • glucose
  • HbA1c (glycosylated haemoglobin to assess diabetes)
  • testosterone and controlling hormones
  • PSA (prostate specific antigen)
  • CA19.9 and CA125 (ovarian cancer tumour markers)
  • vitamin D

Electrocardiogram (ECG) of the heart function

An ECG is a simple, painless test that records you heart's electrical activity to detect heart problems, disorders and diseases.

CT scans

  • We utilise the world’s most advanced CT scanner to obtain very detailed images of your internal organs in multiple planes and in 3D. We evaluate your:
  • heart and its arteries with a CT heart scan to look for any calcium deposition and the earliest signs of atheromatous disease or 'furring up' of the heart arteries
  • heart arteries with a CT coronary angiogram. This scan directly visualises inside even the smallest arteries - no other scanner is able to do this and the images are more accurate than those obtained from even an invasive coronary angiogram
  • aorta to look for any dilation which could detect early signs of aneurysm
  • chest to look for tiny tumours, allowing early resection and cure
  • colonography (a virtual colonoscopy). A scan of the colon to look for colonic polyps or early cancer
  • abdomen to look at the liver, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands and kidneys
  • pelvic area to look at lymph glands and bladder
  • bone mineral density CT scan which measures the bone density in your spine and hips and is a reliable indicator for the presence of osteoporosis
  • brain CT to determine any abnormalities or tumours
  • brain arteries via a CT cerebral artery angiogram which assesses any narrowing or malformations which increase the risk of stroke or haemorrhage
  • neck arteries with a CT carotid artery angiogram to assess the blood flow to the brain
  • body fat to assess visceral and sub-cutaneous fat composition; the former is a major predictor of future heart disease

Ultrasound scans

An ultrasound scan will be performed of the:

  • thyroid to look for any nodules or tumours
  • reproductive organs - in men the testes are scanned to look for tumours and cysts
  • reproductive organs - in women the ovaries and uterus are scanned to look for tumours and cysts or to determine other problems looking for causes of unexplained pain, congenital malformations and also looking at the endometrium of women with abnormal bleeding or infertility

3D digital mammogram

A digital mammogram will be performed in women to help exclude cancer.

MRI

An MRI of the prostate will be performed in men to help exclude cancer.

Medical assessment/post consultation

To complement the tests a full medical assessment is carried out by one of our highly experienced GPs which involves a thorough consultation and physical examination. You will also have a detailed discussion with the GP approximately two weeks after undergoing all of the tests. They will explain the results of your tests and, if any issues have been detected, will discuss the recommended course of action. Should any further investigation be required you can be confident that a referral to one of our specialist consultants can be arranged without delay.

Aside from discussing your results, one of the key objectives of the post-consultation is to help you set your personalised health goals.

The Elite Assessments are highly definitive and they do not need to be repeated annually. Once every 5 years is sufficient for patients under 55 years and once every 3 years for those over 55 years.
