Physiotherapy is an essential part of the multi-disciplinary team at St Joseph’s Hospital, providing key input into the management of Fibromyalgia.

Recent research has increased our understanding of this condition and improved the effectiveness of programmes designed to manage symptoms. Our physiotherapy team work alongside our pain management consultants to design an individualised programme of treatments and therapies to tackle specific aspects of the condition.

These may include:

  • strength and aerobic retraining
  • soft tissue massage
  • graded exercise programme
  • hydrotherapy
  • hydro massage
  • acupuncture

These will aim to improve your posture, physical function and quality of life, and gradually help you to become more active. Physiotherapists can also advise you on relaxation techniques. Our physiotherapists are specialists in assessing movement, addressing individual needs and helping to improve function.

The latest clinical guidelines and recommendations from EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism, 2017) for managing Fibromyalgia supports physiotherapy treatments, particularly aerobic and strengthening exercises. Our approach is holistic and tailor-made, addressing both physical limitations and your beliefs about the condition. We aim to assist in developing self-management strategies and help you become an active participant within the programme, setting specific personal goals and using pacing strategies to help improve your overall activity levels.
